How to be a True Worshipper Despite the Circumstances

I've never heard anyone say, "I hate music." Music is the universal language. There is actually a scientific reason why we love it so. Neurologically speaking, part of the draw of a song is its predication upon repetition. Repetition is a beat. Our prefrontal cortex likes to predict the rhythm of a beat. We tap our toes and dance because we're moving in time with the music and celebrating our successful prediction! Our brains like to make predictions and be right, ergo our love of beat and repetition.

The Psalmist said, "Praise Him with the timbrel and dance." Jesus proclaimed that He played proverbial pipes in the marketplace to get people to DANCE! Make the stumble a part of the dance. Dance in defiance of the dark. Oh, how true it is that life ain't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain! Praise His name with the dance when there are "lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" Do like Daniel: praise the God who shuts the mouth of the lion ever seeking whom he may devour! Do like David who killed the bear and danced in his underwear!

The disciples did a "reign dance" for the King of kings when, in their storm, they sang Jesus' praises. "What manner of Man is this?" they breathed. "Even the wind and waves obey Him!" Their cloaks were soaked, but they knew how to worship wet. Rather than complain and remain, they decided to praise and be raised.

During sermons, we frequent the talking point: Seek first the kingdom of God. But Jesus said that God is the one doing the seeking. He seeks those who will worship Him in spirit and truth.

He's looking for more than fair-weathered worshippers.

He's looking for those who worship wet. This'll take some doing, praising in the storm and all that. Having a gratitude attitude, doing a checkup from the neck up and getting rid of stinking thinking is not easy.

Praising in prisons and storms and things is no mean feat.

Indeed, you may feel like a gasoline engine running on diesel or like you're not moving through time, but time is moving through you; or like life is a song but you forgot the tune. I haven't got blues but Gospel, good news! Here's a happy thought: The divine dance never falls out of step with the song. I'll explain.

When we go to worship services, we sing to God. But did you know God sings back to us? (!!!!) Zephaniah says that when God thinks about you, He gets so happy that He "rejoices over thee with singing." God does not endure you; He ENJOYS you, so enjoy the joy of being enjoyed by God! On a rainy day when you're SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), it's just a really big shower for a really big God. The Lord is so head-over-heels in love with you that He sings in the shower! (Ariana Grande ain't got nothin' on His angel pipes).

Ever wish someone wrote a love song for you? Zephaniah teaches that God croons over you! Ever wish someone wrote waxed lyrical and wrote a poem about you? Paul claims you ARE God's poem. He told the Ephesians you are God's "masterpiece," which is the word poiema in Greek. You are God's poetry in motion, His pièce de résistance. Paul told the Corinthians, "You are the epistle written on our hearts." You are God's love letter to the world, His poem, the epistle He sings to creation.

You're Imago Dei. When you worship, you color the image of a singing God. But remember, broken crayons still color. In fact, the best-selling live piano album of all time was played on broken keys because problems foster creativity. As they force us to come at tasks from an unconventional approach, they force us to become visioneers!

Sing a different tune despite your storm.

"Count it all joy" when you suffer, seeing as how the aphorism is legit: Pain makes you stronger; tears make you braver; heartbreak makes you wiser.

So, thank your past for a better future. You are God's music. Whenever you're sad, there's always a little encouragement nourishment in falling into step with the divine dance. Life is like a piano. The white keys represent joy; the black keys show sadness…as you go through life, remember that black keys make music too.
